Trends in Mortality
The ONS reports in September 2018 “Age-specific mortality rates declined in all age groups between 2001 and 2016. However, in some age groups the rate has fluctuated in more recent years and the rate of improvement has reduced since 2011. Mortality rates in those aged 20 to 24 years through to 30 to 34, 40 to 44 through to 55 to 59, and 65 to 69 all increased between 2015 and 2016. However, none of these increases were statistically significant. Mortality rates for those aged over 75 years significantly increased between 2014 and 2015 but fell between 2015 and 2016 and returned to levels more similar to previous years.
In 2016 the most common cause of death in males was heart disease, accounting for 13.6% of deaths. The most common cause of death in females was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, accounting for 15.8% of deaths.”
