Recent legislation means all employers must place their employees into a workplace pension and contribute to it for them. Only pension schemes meeting strict criteria will qualify. You will then have to run employee assessments every time you run payroll and issue statutory communications whenever appropriate and at the correct time. You must also keep permanent records of all of this, which can then be examined by The Pensions Regulator at any time.
Failure to do so can result in fines being issued.
There are clearly huge issues if you get it wrong: you will face a potential sanction from the Pension Regulator starting with a statutory £400 fine, followed by an ongoing fine of £500 for each day of non-compliance if you employ between 5 and 49 staff. If you employ between 50 and 249 staff this rises to £2,500 per day!
Having a well thought through approach will ensure that all potential hazards such as possible short comings in an existing scheme, HR policy changes, consultations and commitment from providers are overcome.
